Ayurveda is the Science of Life (Ayur-life, Veda-science). Much more than holistic medicine, Ayurveda aims to improve the physical, mental, and spiritual health of an individual.
The primary, or foundational, treatment in Ayurveda is nidan parivarjan (elimination of the cause). Instead of treating the “symptom” of an issue, Ayurveda goes deeper to the root cause and treats that. To give you an example, if you are experiencing acne, hair loss, or even heartburn, these are simply symptoms of an underlying issue. The process of eliminating of the root cause, supports enduring results in Ayurvedic treatment.
Now, that you have a basic understating, let's explore how Ayurveda works, as it relates to skin and hair health.
Elimination of the cause
According to Ayurveda, the health of our metabolism determines the texture of our outer surface, called skin. Just as spoiled milk forms an inconsistent texture, and good milk forms a creamy consistent texture; similarly, balanced metabolism forms flawless skin.
Ayurveda suggests that skin problems start with gut health (the intestines). Our digestive system is the door to our nutrients, but also to toxins and pathogens as well. A strong digestive system can segregate the nutrients and eliminate the pathogenic factors. But…what if the digestive system is weak? Then, you may likely face an issue with your body’s ability to digest and absorb the proper nutrients, and possibly serving as a breeding ground for pathogens.
For example, acne starts as a digestive toxin. The body tries to excrete this toxin through the skin (sebum), but it sticks to the skin and serves as a hatchery for germs and more bacteria. Thus, causing breakouts, known as acne.
As previously stated, Ayurveda targets the root cause.
When we look at hair, quite simply…a healthy scalp naturally leads to healthy hair. Therefore, digestion is also at the core of hair health. The health of our hair begins at the hair root. The roots require a healthy foundation and an unhindered flow of nutrition.
Excellent blood circulation in the scalp is another crucial factor for healthy hair. Ayurvedic herbs such as Rosemary, Bhringraj, Ginger, and Garlic, as well as practices such as scalp massages, helps to increase circulation, and stimulate hair follicles.
Effective head/scalp massages help to rewire the vital points or marma in the head region. These vital points naturally invigorate the blood circulation to the scalp. Thus, the scalp is flooded with nutrients, resulting in amazingly healthy and long hair.
Natural Treatments
Ayurvedic medicines are made from herbs and minerals naturally found in our environment. Our body recognizes these ingredients, and readily incorporates them into its system.
Most Ayurvedic herbs have a mild, yet multi-dimensional effect on the body. Instead of targeting a particular organ or body part, Ayurvedic herbs improve overall health, making them an excellent choice for not only oral consumption, but topical treatment as well.
Let us take the example of Rasayana herbs. This is a special category of herbs that helps to normalize almost all metabolic functions. Some of the famous Ayurvedic Rasayana herbs are Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Brahmi, and Amla. Not only are these herbs good for gut health, but they are also AMAZING for skin and hair.
When topical Ayurvedic treatments are applied to the skin or hair, the body can easily absorb its nutrients, for optimal results. Used orally or topically, the results of Ayurvedic treatments are naturally radiant and healthy skin and hair!
